It came down to an inch – India V Bangladesh

In the very final moments of this nail biting game, the result came down to the most primitive sport. Running. Thanks to Dhoni’s speed across the ground India claim victory by an inch, possibly even millimetres.

After 39.5 overs of a game that swung from one extreme to the other, making viewers across the two countries pop pills to stop their hearts from exploding, all that mattered was who could run faster - Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Mustafizur Rahman.

It shouldn't have come down to this.

When the final over began, Bangladesh needed 11 off it. A single and two streaky fours by Mushfiqur Rahim, one of which was a cheeky scoop that made him break into premature celebrations, brought it down to just two runs off the last three balls. That is when the Bangladeshi batsmen did exactly what Ravichandran Ashwin had predicted, they committed harakiri in search of glory.

India had a very odd innings, scoring a mere 146-7 off their allotted 20 overs. It was an all-round poor display of batting. Wild shots that ended in being bowled and caught. A sloppy flick off his pads from Yuvraj gave away a very easy wicket. Suresh Raina lead the attack scoring a sluggish 30 off 23 balls whilst his team mates fell around him.

Smart bowling and outstanding fielding from the Bangladesh side kept India down to this modest target. Great spells from Hossain and M Rahman 2-37-4 and 2-34-4 respectively gave Bangladesh a firm grip over the Indian’s ability to score runs freely.

Bangladesh came out with positivity and the batting that should have carried them home easily. However, at every turn they tried to throw it away, but a very poor performance in the field from India almost looked like they wanted to hand victory to the Bangladeshis. An early wicket for India helped stem the flow of the runs. With tournament leading run scorer Tamim Iqbal at the top of the order, he lead the attack and scored a mighty fine 35 runs, allowing others to play around him. 2 quick fire 26’s from S Rahman and Al Hasan soon lead Bangladesh to the last over, where they needed just 11.

With two needed from two balls, Ashwin bowled a wide, and the Bangladeshis went for glory. Not needing to have run, they decided to take the speedy Dhoni on. Thankfully for India the decision went to Dhoni, beating Mustafizur Rahman but just millilitres. It was a very close call that could have left either side with a victory where they both so desperately needed it.

Outstanding bowling from Pandaya, Jadeja and Ashwin helped India stay in this game. With 2-29-3, 2-22-4 and 2-20-4 respectively, these were all figures that guided India to the nail-biting finish and without, the game would have been done and dusted a long time before hand.

Here are the highlights from this intense game.

Who will go on to win the tournament? Does India have what it takes after a very shaky start? Or can the dark horses New Zealand pull a win out of the bag? With 3 wins from 3 games, New Zealand are looking like they could just make it.
