Experts have suggested that over a million people could potentially fall victim to the spreading coronavirus by the middle of May. Due to the rise in the number of cases, several parts of India could shut down.
A few places have so far been given a curfew with police monitoring to ensure that the rules are being obeyed.
A state health official said, "This trend is worrying as rural areas have limited infrastructure to deal with the outbreak".
Professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the University of Michigan, Bhramar Mukherjee, explained, “Even with the best-case scenarios, probably, you are in a very painful crisis.”
Another speech was forecast to be given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the second time in a week. In his address, Modi mentioned the problems that the coronavirus could impose on individuals and the country.
"From 12 midnight today [1830 GMT Tuesday], the entire country will be in lockdown, total lockdown," Modi said in his speech. He continued, "To save India, to save its every citizen, you, your family... every street, every neighbourhood is being put under lockdown.”
519 cases of coronavirus were found in India, to date, resulting in ten deaths.
